It’s important to give the customers fast, convenient, and secure ways to pay as they make digital payments part of their day-to-day routine. American Express has invested in a number of technologies to expand digital payment options for their Card Members.

Contactless cards and digital wallets, for example, are among the fastest growing digital payments. According to the latest Amex Trendex: Digital Payments Edition Report1, 74% of U.S. consumers say they have used contactless cards and digital wallets – looking to use tap to pay at the grocery store (48%), retail shops (40%), restaurants and convenience stores (38%), as well as gas stations (37%). And as more countries implement contactless payment options, this category has more runway to grow.

“Consumers expect payments to be seamless and secure, no matter how they choose to pay,” said Matthew Robinson, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Network and Acquiring Solutions at American Express. “Digital payment options are delivering a faster and even safer experience for both our Card Members and merchants.”

Lisa Yokoyama, Senior Vice President and Head of Product of Amex Digital Labs, added, “At American Express, we’re focused on continuing to expand payment options for Card Members by making them flexible and seamless. This includes products and services that make it easier to send money to friends, pay bills, and conduct online transactions. We focus on listening to what Card Members want and leveraging our technology and partnerships to help make it happen.”

Here’s how Amex customers can tap into the company’s variety of digital ways to pay:

Understand the Seamless Digital Wallet Experience

Almost a quarter of consumers use mobile applications always or almost every time they shop online, according to Trendex.

To provide Card Members with the convenience of using their digital wallet which can include Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay or Fitbit Pay, Amex has integrated a token system. This means when a Card Member adds their American Express Credit or Debit Card to their digital wallet, their Card number is replaced with a series of randomly generated numbers – the “token.” This may reduce the risk of fraud and may allow transactions to go through even if a Card number changes over time, as the credentials associated with a token are kept up to date when Cards get replaced.

Take Advantage of AutoPay

To help make timely payments easier, Card Members can login to their account and enroll in AutoPay to schedule automatic payments each month with control over the amount and the dates payments are made.

Buy Now, Pay Later

Another feature of the American Express App is Plan It. Using this capability, eligible U.S. Consumer Card Members have the flexibility to pace out their payments by splitting purchases of $100 or more into equal monthly installments with a fixed fee.

Digitally Send Money & Split Purchases

According to the survey1, 81% of consumers are using peer-to-peer (P2P) payments. To provide customers with this flexibility, American Express allows U.S. Consumer Card Members to make Peer-to-Peer payments right from the American Express App.

Using the Send & Split feature on the American Express App, U.S. Consumer Card Members can send money to other PayPal or Venmo users without the standard credit card fee. They can also split any pending or posted Amex purchase with friends and get paid back directly to their Card as a statement credit. Amex does the math, sends out the split requests and keeps track as you’re paid back.

Dining Out? Use Resy to Easily Split the Check

With Resy Pay, diners at participating Resy restaurants can easily pay or split their checks on their phone by scanning a QR code (either located on the check or at the table). Diners can pay with a credit card saved in their Resy account, or by using Apple Pay or Google Pay. There’s also the option to use American Express Membership Rewards points toward the meal.

Unlock Offers with Your Mobile App

Amex Offers, a collection of thousands of offers, enables Card Members to seamlessly enroll in personalized offers and earn rewards in the form of statement credits or Membership Rewards points. A simple tap on the mobile app (or clicking on desktop) is all it takes to enroll in an offer. The statement credits or Membership Rewards points are then automatically applied to the Card Member’s account after they use that same Card to make a qualifying purchase with a participating merchant.

Easily and Safely Manage Finances Through Third-Party Apps

Through American Express’ customer-permissioned data sharing agreements with leading data aggregation and analytics platforms, Envestnet | Yodlee and Plaid, customers can access new digital banking options without having to share their Amex credentials with any entity other than Amex, and with a seamless connection to financial tools that they trust, know and love.
